Merry Christmas

Posted by AJ Blythe at Friday, November 28, 2008 4 comments

This is going to be the last post on my blog for 2008. With December arriving next week my time is going to filled with a 5th birthday, painting, the MIL coming to visit, packing up the house and us moving out for a week for renovations, Christmas, New Years, and a 3rd birthday.
In between times I am going to be working on my Nanowrimo ms to finish it. Having just lost my job I'm hoping I will have a bit more time to focus on my writing... although I am sure that the kids will keep me busy :o) 2009 is my year for submission and I am going to keep working to that goal.
Wishing you all a Merry and Festive Christmas.

I Want a Universal Remote Control

Posted by AJ Blythe at Monday, November 24, 2008 4 comments

After a shocking week where I have not been able to write due to a myriad of things... stormy weather, renovations, injury, sick kids I have decided a want a Universal Remote Control.

Well, actually, I want a Universe Remote Control. You know, one with a great big pause button. The very action of pressing the pause button on the Universe Remote Control would bring to an immediate stop everything around me, but let me just get on with things.

Wouldn't NaNoWriMo be a breeze then, and imagine all those nasty things you could fast forward through, or rewind to live again?

I guess a big revelation is how much I love to write. I have always known I really enjoyed it, and that I want to make a go of it, but having got into a bit of routine of regular writing (and having a goal) this month, I found I really missed it when I couldn't do it.

I Want to Write

I have had so many interruptions to my writing so far this month that i am getting desparate. I knew that kids and renovations would get in the way, but a miriad of other things seem to be leaping onto my plate to ensure that I have as little time as possible to write.

I have my trusty notebook with me at all times, and the temptation to get it out and write is starting to become a problem. Point to note, never ever do aforementioned sneaky writing at a kindy meeting. For a start 'taking notes' at a kindy meeting looks a) rather dorky and b) like you are sucking up to the teacher. It gets more embarrasing when others start to think they have missed an important date to note and ask what it is you have written down. Probably not such a problem if you are prepared, but answering with the words like 'his arousal was obvious as she leant against him' is really a bit of a problem.

But when the urge to write hits it is just too hard to ignore.....

Writing Blind

Well I've done it. I've discovered that to write quickly I need to do it with my eyes shut ;o) This means that I am only thinking about what is to come, not what has come before. It stops me looking at everything else on the screen and giving in to the editor in me. I am now starting to power along (when I get the chance to write) and I think with a little more practice (because that is what I need) I will be able to put out over 1000wds per day.

Now that I have made a breakthrough I need to get on with it. Back to writing....

My Hero and Heroine

Posted by AJ Blythe at Thursday, October 30, 2008 0 comments

Well, after much research (gee it was tough) I have found my hero for my NaNoWriMo novel. I tend to base my heroes not just on the looks, but on personality and character as well. So Ashley Jameson needed someone who represents a tough man of the land who could also exhibit a softer side - and always tries to please the women in his life. I also needed someone who is loyal and determined. So I have gone with Ozzy Lusth from Survivor - for anyone who watches the current season airing in Australia (Fans v Favourites) he really shows his vulnerable/softer side (I have already seen the series). So for your viewing pleasure here is my hero.

Now my heroine needed to be someone who is bubbly, naturally happy, who is gorgeous as a princess or a pauper. Someone from whom the sun shines. Someone who could be scandinavian. There was really only one obvious choice for Brigitta Vasa and that is Drew Barrymore.
Now all I have to do is tell their story.....

Beating the Editor

Posted by AJ Blythe at Wednesday, October 22, 2008 4 comments
My biggest hurdle to overcome is the editor in me. When I write I have trouble holding myself back from editing/rewriting/a bit more editing etc etc the page or so that I will have just written. So instead of writing another page or so, I will have a perfectly edited page. This, of course, gets changed a few weeks later when my plot has developed and I suddenly realise that changes need to be made elsewhere. What a waste!!

I know it sounds silly, but I really struggle with this. Just sitting down and writing, without going back, is something I have never, ever been able to do. And this is where the challenge of NaNoWriMo lies. To be able to complete the 50,000 target in the time I can't edit. If I do I will have to confess to all that I am just not meeting my target. Aaaagggghh. Talk about inspiration to beat the editor in me.

But if I can do it for NaNoWriMo, then I will be able to continue (hopefully) to avoid over editing. Some good preparation will also help me do this I think. Of course, I had been doing wonderful preparation, but just a few days ago suddenly decided (gotta love those 2am inspirations) to completely change what I am going to write. Nothing close to what I had been planning. So back to planning. 9 days to go so better get a wiggle on.

Prep, Prep, Prep

Posted by AJ Blythe at Wednesday, October 15, 2008 3 comments
As the title suggests I have been frantically preparing for NaNoWriMo. So far this has entailed rereading my notes from the Harlequin Book Writing Guide and stocking up on pens and paper. While I type my story on my laptop, I really need a stock of paper and pens as it is on paper that the real work occurs. I scrawl notes, draw arrows linking ideas, scribble dialogue as it pops into my head if it is for a different part of the story. I keep notes on my research, take notes on sections already typed up that need to be revisited or checked for consistency. I love being able to spread my papers out and see the big picture which a tiny little screen just can't do. When I am writing my mind is going at a million miles an hour, and often much faster then my fingers will type, but I can scrawl in my own abbreviated writing style and not let a single idea slip by. So this week I am planning on reading a few Harlequin Sweet to help me stay on track for the line my NaNo ms is going to target. I have been reading all sorts of things of late and don't want my focus to stray. I am also going to do some characterisation prep and try to write a sentence or 2 highlighting the conflict for each chapter. Again this is to help keep me focussed when writing under the pressure of NaNo.

First Post - the Start

Well, I've finally done it. I've created my Blog to record my trials and tribulations as I attempt to write a sweet romance that will knock the socks off Harlequin. I am making this a weekly post so that it doesn't become a procrastination tool!! I am doing NaNoWriMo (writing 50,000 words in November) so the next few weeks will be preparing for that. Although this will probably be more organising my life to make sure I have time to write then storyline preparation etc. Fingers crossed.
