Back Up!!!

Posted by AJ Blythe at Monday, November 09, 2009

I'm having computer troubles.

Not small hiccups where MSWord suddenly reformats my document, but the scary kind. I'll be using my computer, not doing anything much, just typing away at my ms, when suddenly it turns off. No warning, no shut down, just bang, no power-everything gone-kinda crash.

I think it might be terminal, and I'm very worried I'll lose something important. It certainly highlights the need to back up. I've backed up my files twice (just in case) and am sending my ms edits to hotmail every night, but a few times I've been caught out. I get on a roll and am madly typing, when WAM, there she goes. And everything is gone. So I'm trying to save every few minutes, but time becomes a vacant black hole when I get into the groove.

Anita, do you ever defragment your disk drive? Sometimes it can make your day quite refreshing. ---- Why? If the disk drive is defragmented excessively there mightn’t be enough space locatable for the swap file to exist; bang everything can/will go south, at random. --- Oh, if the message “Not enough space to defragment” appears, that’s quite a message about the life and the future in itself.

Method: My Computer (right click) / Properties (click) / Tools (click) / Defragment Now (Click) / Defragment (click) …. Wait (or keep working slowly) while sipping coffee --- No better still play with this site with ‘Junior’ on your lap ---- ----- Computers aside; hope all si progressing well in Anita land. ---- Eric

Thanks Eric. Unfortunately I do defrag (maybe not regularly enough?). And I clean out disk space daily. And have run spyware and virus software.

Methinks it's just overworked ;o)

And Anita land is progressing ever so slowly, but will get there eventually.

Are you going for Golden Heart? Good luck!! I entered GOTCHA with Silicon Valley and decided GH will be next year.

Anita, I talked myself out of any Golden Heart entry. --- So it's back to my original motivate, just write more/better. ---- I'll try to think of something your computer would love to 'snack' on to make her happy. It's said you should dress up to use a computer to receive good response times. Computers have feelings they don't like looking back at an owner who takes them for granted being too casual. --- Eric

Hi Anita,
I have taught myself to constantly hit "Control S". That is the shortcut for "Save". It's become such a habit I even do it when writing emails - it also works in Outlook Express and GMail, not sure in Hotmail.

Good luck. And HUGS for your PC woes :(

he blue screen blues. Whack! Gone-ski. Kaput. That's why I haven't been around too much lately - that and download limits. Yikes! I back up using Norton, I have a 4GB stick, I have another one I carry in my handbag incase someone breaks in ad steals my computer and I email files also. Paranoid or what. BTW - overworked is a good thing for a writer's computer LOL

Hi Anita
Save stuff onto a USB or a mini hard drive (which is just a big USB).

When my computer crashed and I lost the hard drive earlier this year I was lucky to get most of the files back, but lost some handy programs. That's when the tech guy convinced me to get the mini hard drive. Mine is a Philips USB 2.0 mobile disk. Of course, being technologically challenged, I'm not sure how to use it properly but I try to save all the important stuff onto it, just in case.
