Flushable Wipes Aren't Flushable - Don't Flush Them!

The following article is from the ACT Government Information Portal:

Wet wipesCanberra's sewer systems are being choked with great mounds of supposedly 'flushable' wet wipes.

Instead of disintegrating, the wet wipes gain mass as they travel through the sewer, congealing with fats, grease and oil and causing nasty blockages. They also regularly clog our sewer pumps around the city.

There's a blockage caused by wet wipes every three days in Canberra, which require our workers have to manually remove at a cost of $70,000 each year.

The problem isn't just in the nation's capital, it’s a worldwide issue - and it's getting worse.

In 2013, Thames Water in the UK had to remove a 15 tonne 'fatberg' made up of wipes and cooking oil that blocked the London sewer network.

In New York, the annual bill for equipment damage from wet wipes is in the millions.

Sydney Water also claims to have removed 500 tonnes worth of wet wipes from its waste water systems over the past two years – costing the Sydney community millions of dollars annually.

A wet wipe is any kind of baby wipe, toilet wipe, body wipe, personal hygiene wipe or cleaning wipe. They are often incorrectly marketed as flushable.

Icon Water, along with the rest of the national water and wastewater sector, is working with the wet wipe industry to find solutions moving forward.

In the meantime, remember that only human waste and toilet paper should ever be flushed down the loo.

My Goal Memos

Notebook by Santoro
About 18 months ago a very dear friend of mine gave me a little memo notebook (that's the cover image on the right - isn't it cute!). I've had it sitting on my desk since then, determined to use it for my mini goals.

This week I've finally found myself in a position to start using it. I've written my first goal on it: Write and submit query by 31st July. It's stuck right next to my computer screen.

I work really well when I have a definite goal. I don't want them to be unreachable, just little goals that together will get me to the big one... finishing a manuscript that will gain an agent and get a publishing contract.

As soon as I reach my current mini goal I will write a new one. I'm going to try for one a week, but there's no hard and fast rule.

How do you goal set?

Read All Night... Almost

It's been a long time since I had a book I couldn't put down - and actually had the time to keep reading. Usually when I know I have a book I'll want to devour in one sitting I put it to one side to save it for a time when I can do just that. I guess that's why I have some books from favourite authors that have been gathering dust for years.

Recently I made a decision to start making changes to my life and get things back in balance. Less work, more time for family and play (and writing!).

So last night I picked up one of those books I've been saving up. I chose The Hunger Games. I've been wanting to read them forever (I've had the trilogy since the last book came out). With my eldest Barbarian almost at an age where he can read them I thought I'd better get to them first. And I want to see the movies but won't watch them until the books are read.

Totally. Loved. Book 1. Couldn't put it down (as I hoped) and forced myself to switch the bed light off at 1am. I'm well into book 2 now and I know it will be another late reading session for me tonight. At least it's Friday so it doesn't matter when I turn the light off.

When was the last time you had a book you couldn't put down? Please share the details of the book because I love finding new books to read.
