Take a plot and put your own unique twist on it... I've heard that time and time again.
The best example of how doing this works that I think I've come across is by comedians Axis of Awesome - not exactly where you'd think to look but their "Four Chord Song" really does demonstrate it beautifully. I'll leave it to them to explain...

It's great seeing this live. I've seen the Axis of Awesome at the Adelaide Fringe the last two years.
Oooh, lucky you, Eleni. I've only ever seen them on the telecast comedy festivals.
