The National Day for Australia on January 26th marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the first fleet to Australia and the proclamation of British Sovereignty.

It's still the 25th here, but Happy Australia Day, Anita!! :D Since this commemorates the first European settlement on Australian soil, it seems a bit of an odd celebration. Usually countries celebrate their independence--do you have a separate day for that? How do the Aborigines feel about Australia Day? I presume they don't participate? Just curious... :)
Thanks, Colin. It's not so strange celebrating the settlement of our country when you consider we aren't independent =) As always happens when this day rolls around there's much talk in the media about us becoming independent. But for now we are still part of the monarchy with a Prime Minister as leader and a Governor General who is the Queen's representative.
The point of view of Aboriginals varies. There are some (and they are the vocal ones we hear in the media) who call this Invasion Day, but there are others who are grateful for what the country is today. My (step) Father-in-law is Aboriginal and celebrates Australia Day, and he is very committed to Aboriginal rights. I guess it's a personal thing.
Interesting. I guess I just assumed since Australia has its own Parliament, it has some kind of independence. Serves me right for never asking! Thanks for the education. :)
Well, how is tomorrow looking for us? It's still yesterday, your Australia Day, here in America :) I have always been fascinated by Australia, ever since I was a kid and memorized the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day for a theater audition. The refrain in the book was "I think I'll move to Australia" which I keep thinking I might actually do one day. At least, I would love to visit. I like your site. It seems well put together. Keep writing.
