What should I do? The Social Media Conundrum

Posted by AJ Blythe at Monday, February 27, 2017 0 comments

It's been a while since I posted to my blog. During my downtime I've been contemplating social media and where I want to put my efforts - like everyone these days I'm time poor and need to prioritise. I've tried out a few and read about others. I found this really cool explanation of what's out there at the moment:

Okay, so maybe it was the doughnuts that got my attention, but it is a practical explanation.

Me being me, I thought I'd do some research to see what others were using, the demographics of those users and so on. Instead of making things clearer things just got more confusing. I haven't heard of nearly half the top ten used social media platforms in the world!

This statistic provides information on the most popular networks worldwide as of January 2017, ranked by number of active accounts.  Source: https://www.statista.com/statistics/272014/global-social-networks-ranked-by-number-of-users/
It gets more confusing when you consider the following information:

In addition to thinking about social media I thought long and hard about my blog - where does it fit into my 'social media time' allowance? Does it fit?

After much consideration I've decided:
  • to keep my blog. Hopefully blogging at least twice a week. But I've also decided I want to set up my author web page and integrate my blog into that. So I've done a course on branding and today am starting a course on developing a wordpress web page. Watch this space for updates!
  • to still tweet. I've been a bit on/off with twitter, but I'm going to try and get in the habit of setting aside a little bit of time everyday to 'check in'.
  • to try out instagram. I joined instagram about a year or so ago. I used it for a little while but didn't really have a clear idea of what to do with it. I enjoy taking photos so I think this if I give it another go I'll have fun.
  • keep my pinterest page. This is more of a personal thing rather than a business one. I like having a place to keep images of interest together.

I've Reached 500

I just realised that my Happy Australia Day post was my 500th blog post!

Source: Jack Clabough

When I started my blog back in October 2008 I didn't really have any long term goals with it. To be honest, I wasn't even sure about starting a blog. But I thought I'd give it a shot and over 7 years later I'm still posting.

You can tell by looking at the history of my posts I've had good and bad years for blogging - usually a reflection of my life and how much time I have. In that time the Barbarians have grown from toddlers to nearly teens, the Hub and I have renovated 2 houses, relocated 1600km and over two state lines (about 1000 miles), and I've just started my 5th paid job (joys of being a casual worker bee) and worked almost full time hours volunteering.

All going to plan life is going to be on a more even keel this year. I guess how often I post will let you know if I'm succeeding.

They say a change is as good as a holiday... not sure about that, but I have had a lot of fun creating my new look blog. What do you think?

New Look Blog

Posted by AJ Blythe at Sunday, April 26, 2009 5 comments
Phew. I think I have done it. I have updated my blog. Having been a newbie to blogging (only starting late last year), my skills at creating a blog left a lot to be desired. Sure, the last blog had posts - but that was about it. Hopefully my new blog has a lot more to offer.

I intend to focuss on all the bits of my life that weave into, get in the way of and prop me up as I try to reach my dream. So watch this space. Hopefully "Anita Joy, Harlequin's latest author" will be a post of the future.
